Gori de Palma and Hasan Hejazi at Runway Malta 2011

Dear Readers,

How are you all doing? It’s Friday, and you know what? You know you gotta get down on Friday. So I guess it’s time to get down on my desk and write about the last two collections from last Sunday’s Runway Malta show. Today, we’re having a look at Gori de Palma and Hasan Hejazi.

Gori De Palma

As some of you might have discovered last Sunday, Gori de Palma is a Spanish designer from the beautiful Mediterranean island of Mallorca. Apart from looking exceptionally unique in his own appearance, Gori de Palma has granted his collection an incredible sense of uniqueness that truly defined his style. I had heard very good things about this designer even before attending the show itself. A number of websites I consulted described him as the next big thing in the fashion industry. Needless to say, all of this positive feedback built up very high expectations and I’m happy to declare that he definitely didn’t fail to meet these expectations on the day.

There are no words to describe the sheer beauty of this collection. I chose the word ‘sheer’ intentionally, because as the photos clearly show, this collection was all about sheer. Sheer here, sheer there, sheer everywhere!  Sheer pants, sheer shorts, sheer skirts!

Until a couple of months ago, as I read about the ‘sheer trend’ online, I was quite sceptical about it. Then it started to grow on me gradually as I saw hundreds of people sporting the trend on a number of fashion websites. I’m glad Gori de Palma used sheer so extensively because it gives us mortals a good dose of inspiration.

Since I was so influenced by Gori de Palma’s collection, I decided to grab myself a few sheer buys too. I’m starting off with this New Look sheer maxi skirt. ASOS also have one for a slightly higher price. I found this pretty sheer shirt that looks incredibly similar to the one designed by Gori de Palma, so I definitely recommend if you want to get the Gori look.

I am particularly fond of tweed. Among the many textiles available, I think tweed makes a woman look polished, dressed up and sophisticated. Gori de Palma’s collection featured some grey tweed as well. This is something I especially enjoyed, specifically because he gave tweed an edgy, rock and roll twist. Those tweed shorts are a dream, seriously.

Gori de Palma, this won't end here. I'm going to follow you very closely, because I really, really like your style.

Hasan Hejazi

Hasan Hejazi needs no introduction amongst fashion insiders and avid readers of Nylon, Dazed and Confused and the Financial Times. Yes, his work was featured in all of those publications. Where are my fellow Kylie Minogue, Jessie J and Alesha Dixon fans? Any idea who dressed Kylie here, Jessie here and Alesha here? Yes, it was Hejazi. He must be good, right? Well he sure is. Just look at the photos from his collection to confirm why we all have the Hejazi bug.

Hejazi's colours are bright and funky, even though there were black pieces on the catwalk too. With regard to cuts and structures, Hasan Hejazi's collection had plenty of fitted garments, although it included a couple of full maxi-skirts and skater skirts as well. My favourite aspect of this collection was the range of fabrics used - gorgeous fabrics, might I add - from sequined fabric to leather, to sheer and mesh. Something I also noted and liked was the way he seems to always emphasise a woman's waist through his use of belts. The result is a very feminine garment that is highly flattering, to say the least. So, if you wanna get all Hejazi this weekend, belt it woman.

Admire the sheer dress above. I remember discussing the idea of a sheer maxi dress a few months ago on a number of fashion websites. Many, many people were against the idea completely. I wasn't too sure about it either. But, hey, it doesn't look bad does it? Some other technical features which I particularly liked in this collection are the exposed zips on the pink dresses and the employment of mesh panelling.

This post brings the Runway Malta Series to an end. I would like to congratulate all designers, organisers and anyone involved once again. It was an incredible event and I bet many people, just like me, are already looking forward to attend next year.

Before leaving you readers to enjoy your Friday night, I want to give you some fashion hints I picked up at last Sunday's fashion shows:
  1. Buy Brogues, many. If not, buy loafers.
  2. Belt it like Hejazi if you want to look more feminine.
  3. Don't be afraid of sheer. If Gori de Palma approves, then we're safe.
  4. Wear socks on heels. Thank you Curpina.
  5. Snakeskin rocks. Ewa Nowacka taught me that.
I wish you all a very pleasant Friday night!
